Visas

Spain is a member of the European Union and has joined the Schengen Agreement, which means that you can enter on a European Union Schengen visa and there are no longer any ID/passport controls on internal EU borders.

Beside the countries outlined above, citizens from the following countries may travel to Spain for tourism and business purposes with a valid passport and without a visa if their planned stay does not exceed 90 days: Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, El Salvador, Georgia, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Macao, Malaysia, Mexico, Monaco, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, San Marino, Singapore, South Korea, USA, Uruguay, Vatican and Venezuela. Citizens of all other countries must obtain a visa in order to enter and stay in Spain legally. Always check with the local Spanish Embassy or on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website for updates as this can change.

Regular visas are issued for travellers going to Spain for tourism and business purposes. Regular visas allow for one or multiple entries into Spanish territory and stay in Spain for maximum up to 90 days and are issued for the definite period of stay. When applying for a visa, please indicate the number of days you plan to spend in Spain and a date of intended arrival. Holders of regular visas are not authorized to work.

By plane

Most of Europe's major airlines fly to and from Spain, as well as many international companies with flights arriving to Madrid and Barcelona.

Santander has an international airport with direct flight connections to several european
cities including London, Paris, Roma, Frankfurt, Brussels, Dublin and Milan, all of them operated by Ryanair (check flights to/from Santander in www.ryanair.com).
And it is also well connected via Madrid or Barcelona to many other destinies,
using Ryanair flights to those airports, or Iberia (see www.iberia.com ) connections.
Notice that Iberia flies to Madrid T4 and Barcelona T1 terminals, while Ryanair flies to
Madrid T1 and Barcelona T2 terminals, and change of terminal requires taking a bus.

Another good option to get to Santander by plane is to fly to Bilbao, as Bilbao airport is at
100 km from Santander, and you can take a taxi (around 120 euros) or a bus combination (from the airport to Bilbao center, and from Bilbao center to Santander in ALSA company, see www.alsa.es).
Lufthansa, Esasyjet, Airfrance, Alitalia and other companies have flights to Bilbao.

By train

A direct connection with Madrid is operated from Santander three times a day. The train takes
around 4h30, and it is modern and comfortable, and has 200km of high speed. Price is around
50 euros. See www.renfe.es for reservations.

DO NOT TAKE THE TRAIN FROM BILBAO TO SANTANDER (www.feve.es), or only if you want to travel like 50 years ago (it takes around 3 hours for 100 km, although the views are very nice).

By car

You can enter Spain by one of many roads linking Spain with the neighboring countries.
From France to get into Santander, there is a toll highway, and it takes around 2h to get to Santander, after bordering Bilbao.

From Madrid there is a direct free highway combination (A1 to Burgos, then A66 to Osorno,
then A67), it takes around 4h.

By bus

There are several international bus lines that connect Santander with many european cities,
but not so competitive compared to plane (example: Paris 14h, around 130 euros). See www.alsa.es.

By boat

Santander is well connected by ferry boat with Plymouth and Portsmouth, 3 times a week,
see http://www.brittanyferries.es/
